One of my favorite animal story books from childhood is Aesop's Fables. The version I have was published in 1947 and features wonderful pen and ink illustrations by Fritz Kredel (with a few paintings as well). His animals are not anthropomorphic but very animated, and his drawings are built with loose but extremely elegant calligraphic lines.
My interpretation of the "Sour Grapes" fox is painted in watercolor, inks and acrylic on archival panel. Comes in a black wooden gallery frame, 7/8" face and 1.5" deep.
